This is just a quick note to give some mad respect to Matt Segal, for making the 4th ascent of Sonnie Trotter’s, Cobra Crack last Tuesday. What’s the grade on that thing!? Something like 14c? I actually heard this news soon after Matt’s redpoint. I got a text message from the notorious Will Stanhope saying that “Matty Segal just sent Cobra. Sickest fucking thing I have ever witnessed.” That’s a bold statement because I’m sure Will has seen some real sick shit.
In his blog, Matt describes his breakthrough: “It wasn’t until the day before I sent that I finally accepted the fact that I may not be successful, and I think it was because of this shift in attitude that I was able to send.” These words are so very true. I cannot count the number of redpoints I’ve done where I pretty much conceded that it just wasn’t going to happen. Without the burden of self-expectation or the anticipation of success, the body is free from the conscious mind’s conviction that you’re not ready to send. Sometimes the reckless I don’t give a shit attitude allows you to perform without limits. And in this state of mind Matt was rewarded for all his hard work. Congrats on the send!
